Just some white dude writing about Black History...

I once took an African American Literature course at Wichita State University. First day, teacher opens by saying: "In case you haven't noticed, I'm white."

Then, I laughed. But now, I make the same proclamation as I write a blog about Black History Month. I'm white.

Not only am I white, but I come from a tiny Kansas town of approximately 600 people, all white. Disclaimer aside, here are a few thoughts on race relations:

- Ignorance: I've actually heard various white people complain about Black History Month. "Why should they get their own month? Why isn't there a White History month?," they'll say. My reply; two words: Shut up.

- We have a black President. Well, sort of. He's actually as much white as he is black-- something I feel people forget about completely. But still...I'm proud to say I voted for him. Despite your political views, or my own personal doubts about whether or not I'd vote for him again, I'll never regret voting for him the first time. Change was needed, period--not just politically, but socially. [opinion]

- Some of the most fun basketball I've ever played in my life was at the YMCA in Pittsburg, KS every Sunday afternoon in the Fall of '03. It was usually me, and 35+ black guys. I saw one other white dude there--once. That was it. The way we played: If you didn't get picked, you didn't play. Ever. Several guys wound up just watching for 4 hours every week. Luckily, a guy saw me hit several shots warming up and said: "I'll take the white kid." Everyone laughed, but I played well my first game and got picked every week from then on. Fun, fun times--and some darn good basketball.

- My best black friends: Justin Rogers, Ashley Hurd, Larry Ellis.

- Most interesting racial conversations: My old roommate, Donta Cherry. Ah, brings back memories. Love that guy!

- Most annoying racial remarks: When people from my hometown see me wearing a pair of baggy shorts or a hat backwards, various folks often say: "Why are you dressing black?" or "Do you think you're black?" This is beyond stupid. Why can't it be a cultural thing vs. racial? Why can't it be a style I enjoy and find comfortable from time-to-time? Would you ever go up to a black person wearing blue jeans and ask them: "Why are you dressing white?" I very much doubt it.

- Saddest story of racism: Off the top of my head...Bobby Hutton. [click his name for link to brief Wikipedia explanation] Heard his name in one of my favorite songs of all-time, Ghetto Gospel--a collaboration by Tupac Shakur/Elton John. Did some research on him, and the story is sickening.

* Lighter note * I tried thinking of a couple light-hearted racial clips that wouldn't be offensive to anyone. I came up with a movie scene and a racial joke that shouldn't be offensive to any race, and are just funny in general. :)

- Funny movie clip:
Jerry Maguire: "I love black people! Show me the money!"
Rod Tidwell: "Congratulations, you're still my agent." HA. Freaking classic.

Joke time: The Greatest, Muhammad Ali. Enjoy.

What a weak week. Word. Wait, what? Whoa, weird.

Due to the desire to write, yet lacking much of an idea--let's try a good ole recap of the week, hopefully in a comedic way, of sorts. Tried a few of those awhile back to relatively positive reviews.

Thurs; Dec 10...
7:00-8:45 PM--Play a little roundball with the fellas at home in Pretty Prairie. Only managed enough for 2-on-2, but it was fun, as small town basketball usually is. Then this one crazy cat apparently tripped over something (no one saw it) and watched his ankle swell to the size of a beach ball within minutes. He claims he blocked a shot on the play. Ironically, no one saw that either.

Fri; Dec 11...
I do not remember this day. It must not have happened.

Sat; Dec 12...
9 PM-4 AM (Sun)--Hang out in Hutchinson. Watch I Love You, Man for the first time. I pretty much am Paul Rudd. Except for the whole fiancee thing.

Sun; Dec 13...
4:57 AM--Finally arrive home. It should be a 30 minute drive, max. Worst fog I've ever seen in my life extended the drive a bit. Not pleasant.

6:00 PM--Game time.

6:53 PM--Another close loss, 0-4. 62-68, bad guys. For the first time, I wasn't horrendous. Barely. By my count: 16 points, 13 rebounds. Estimate of what I probably should have had: 28 points, 18 rebounds. Had a nice blocked shot on a former teammate I admire a lot (got called for a nonsense foul, but it was a make-up call for something I got away with previously).

Missed a few chippies--pause to check if "chippies" is a real word or just basketball slang. Chippies: Plural of chippy--a promiscuous young woman. Yikes. Definitely not what I meant. Rephrasing...I missed a few easy baskets.

Oh, promiscuous. Easy! Yeah, I get it now...

7:51-9:18 PM--Get back to gym in Pretty Prairie and join the hometown blokes for some 4-on-4.

7:59 PM--Receive a message that totally spikes my curiosity. Like a volleyball. You know, except not boring. Guffaw.

Mon; Dec 14...
11:45 AM-2:15 PM--Get some good games in on the courts at Wichita State. My team won in its first 7 games. Then a loss, then two wins, a loss, and a win. 10-2? In pickup ball? Pshaw, I'll take it.

7(ish) PM--Watch a pretty intense double-overtime Middle School game. Pretty Prairie wins on a tip-in at the buzzer. That kid will remember that moment forever. I know I have a few moments like that. One that was eerily similar, in fact.

Tue; Dec 15...
8 PM-12:30 AM (Wed)--Hang out in Hutchinson again. Pizza rolls and bread sticks from "The Hut" and a drink from Sonic? Eh, fuggedaboutit! <-- imagine an Italian accent.

Wed; Dec 16...
3 PM-6 PM--Jaunt to Wichita. Pick up a few Christmas gift on very limited budget. Result: I'm an awesome big brother, a decent son and pretty solid brother-in-law. As for being a little brother? Jury still out.

6:30--Taco Bell. Cheesy Gordita Cruch. And some soft shells on the side. No lettuce. Dr. Pepper. Yum.

This is a very anti-climactic ending, but that's pretty much all I've got this time.

Degree in liberal arts? You want fries with that?

As you probably know, I attended 4 colleges in my post-secondary career. Primarily in my quest to play college basketball--which I did. But that aside, I decided it might be fun to compare the different aspects of each, once and for all. Just kind of compiling my various favorites at each place.

Pittsburg State University: NCAA Div. II--Pittsburg, KS (Fall 2003)

Mascot: Gorillas
Where I played ball: The Weede Gymnasium--on PSU campus, Pittsburg YMCA
Best basketball moment: Dominating 3-on3 intramurals with Justin, Cortney, and Eric.
Best teacher: Chuck Killingsworth. He only "taught" my Freshman Experience class, but he's the only guy whose name I remember, and was a pretty cool guy.
Best friend: Justin Rogers
Crushes: Krystine Foster, Laura Garrison

McPherson College: NAIA--McPherson, KS (Spring/Fall 2004)
Mascot: Bulldogs
Where I played ball: Sports Center--on MC campus.
Best basketball moment: Getting the chance to play for Coach Trimmell--even if just in practice. Scoring 56 points in an intramural game was pretty neat, too.
Best teacher: Whoever taught my biology class. Female, maybe in her late-30s or so. She was pregnant during one of my two semesters there (for anyone reading this who may know who I'm talking about). She was real cool, and actually got me semi-interested in science--which I never thought possible. Wish I could remember her name...
Best friend: Justin Bacon
Crush: Sarah Story

Kansas Wesleyan University: NAIA--Salina, KS (Spring 2005)

Mascot: Coyotes
Where I played ball: St. John's Military School--I played there with some football guys on occasion. Oh, and don't forget the shoddy old gym with the yellow lighting.
Best basketball moment: Playing college basketball, period. Circumstances were all but ideal, but I did it, nonetheless. Playing against my pals from McPherson, and my ex-roommates Donta' and Travis was really cool--though I would've rather been on the other side.
Best teacher: No good ones stand out. This was not a pleasant semester for me. Yikes.
Best friend: No one. Not while I was there, anyway. Ashley Hurd and I have become good friends since, though.
Crush: No one. I kept to myself--a lot.

Wichita State University: NCAA Div. I--Wichita, KS (2005-2007)
Mascot: Shockers
Where I played ball: Heskett Center--on WSU campus. Still play there whenever I can get back up there. I try to once a week.
Best basketball moment: Just the everyday camaraderie of the guys up at Heskett.
Best teacher: Stephen Hathaway. I took three different Literature classes from him. Would've taken more if I could. Hilarious man, and a very good teacher. Second place: Lindsey Harvell. But mostly because we became friends after that class. It was her first semester as a "real teacher," and she's only 3 years older than me. Cool chick.
Best friend: Amanda Walker. Best person I know, period. My hero. Though I miss Mac all the time, had I stayed, I never would've met her. Because of her, I realize God has a plan with everything He does.
Crushes: Amanda Walker, Darcie Spresser.

Is it weird that I never dated a single one of these college crushes? The only girlfriend I ever had while in college was with a girl I'd actually gone to High School with. This seems a little sad.

Tale of the tape:
Best campus: McPherson College. Small, but very homey. I miss that place every day.
Best cafeteria: Pittsburg State. The food may have been slightly better at Mac, but the convenience, the selection, and friendliness of cooks gives Pitt the edge.
Best dorms: McPherson College. Especially if you lived in Morrison Hall. Second place: Wichita State. The other two schools? Not quality.
Best athletic facilities: McPherson College. K-Dub has built a new gym that I haven't seen since I left. WSU has a very slick D-1 arena (Koch). But without a legit football stadium--or at least a team to use it--it's got to be Mac.
Best coach: Roger Trimmell, McPherson College. Not really even close here. If you know him, you know why. Second place: Nelson Haggerty (ex-Pitt State assistant). Very caring young coach who deserves a shot at the big-time someday. Honorable mention: Mark Turgeon (ex-WSU coach). A few isolated conversations with him, and attended a camp, but obviously never played for him.

I am sure this is not the least bit interesting to any of you, but it gave me something to sort out, if nothing else. Curse me and my OCD, eh?

*Sigh*

You used to be Mel Clark?

Day 27: INcomplete

Morning session: N/A
Evening session: 6.29 miles
Total distance: 6.29 miles

No morning run yet again
. Trying not to be too hard on myself, since I've already reached the 300 mark, but...this was the third morning in 4 days that I didn't run. Need to get after it tomorrow. We'll see if that pans out.

Managed to dig up a few more sports flicks around the house, and I'll check the town library to see if they have any others that I haven't watched yet this month...

Now: Rookie of the Year. It features the Cubs; what's not to like?

Speaking of which--the boys in blue are tied 1-1 heading to the 13th inning. Here we go again. They need the win to hold onto 1st place. C'mon, fellas!

But there's only a few minutes left in the movie, so next we'll have: Angels in the Outfield. Funny flick with some baseball, some silliness, and a few nice, sentimental moments, too.

**Cubs win, Cubs win! Grand slam, Alfonso Soriano! 5-1, Cubs in 13 innings. Huge, huge win!!**

Tonight's Top 10 list:

Top 10 Favorite teachers (excluding my mom) I've ever had (and what classes I had with them):

10. Chuck Killingsworth, Pittsburg State University: Fresman Experience
9. Allan Van Asselt, McPherson College: Chemistry
8. Cheryl Matthews, Pretty Prairie Middle School: 7th/8th grade English
7. Jon Johnson, Pretty Prairie High School: American History, American Government
6. C.T. Young, Pretty Prairie High School: Physical Science, Biology
5. Patti French, Pretty Prairie Middle School: 5th grade
4. B.J. Stegall, Pretty Prairie High School: Algebra II, Geometry
3. Lindsey Harvell, Wichita State University: Public Speaking
2. Chuck Ray, Pretty Prairie High School: English, Creative Writing
1. W. Stephen Hathaway, Wichita State University: American Literature, Modern American Writers, Nature of Fiction

Not sure what spurned this, but felt like it was a good use of some thought.

Side note; #3:
Lindsey Harvell (aka, Linds) taught my Public Speaking class my first semester at WSU. I was a Junior, had just transferred in, and she was just starting her teaching career.
- She is now a professor at the University of Oklahoma *puke*. We became friends after that semester. Weird stuff. Cool chica, though.

Hathaway and Ray have both been very influential in my, uh, weirdness.

I'm against picketing, but I don't know how to show it. - Mitch Hedberg

Day 22: INcomplete

Morning session: 2.00 miles
Evening session: 2.00 miles
Total distance: 4.00 miles

As much of a "day off" as I'll take. Same as July 10, I went to WSU to play ball with my Wichita buddies. Ran a little on the track before and after.

Movie now: Blades of Glory.

I know, I know, right? Ha!

Movie sometime tomorrow, and the final sports movie of my DVD collection (still a few more on the VHS side): Wimbledon.

Very solid flick. Good acting, and kind of a cute story. Plus, tennis is fun, so you know.

Got a buddy supposed to be comin' down tomorrow for some evening hoops, and Friday morning golf. Translation: I need a very productive morning run tomorrow, and evening run Friday. Was hoping to hit 300 by Friday, but now it's looking like Saturday will be the big day.

--Another e-mail from my best friend in the wide world today, Amanda Lee Walker. We don't get to talk much; she's on the other side of the galaxy (well, Connecticut), and I sure do miss her a whole bunch. She's been so supportive through my grueling month. She rocks! Raccoon.

Tonight's top 10 list:

Top 10 comedians of all-time:

10. D.L. Hughley
9. Chelsea Handler
8. Rich Vos
7. Sarah Silverman
6. Ralphie May
5. George Carlin
4. Dave Chappelle
3. Demitri Martin
2. Richard Pryor
1. Mitch Hedberg

Rest in Peace, Mitch. Funny, funny dude.

A roughly compiled list. Everytime I thought to list someone, I thought of 3 or 4 others just as funny. But this list works for me. :)

What did YOU do this week?

Day 21: Complete
Week 3: Complete

Morning session: 11.73 miles
Evening session: 5.78 miles
Total distance: 17.51 miles

Milestone reached: 100 miles in 1 week (106.73)

I am very pleased with this milestone. I wasn't sure 100 miles in one week was attainable. But after 19+ and 14+ on the first 2 days of the week, I knew I had a shot.

Ran yet another career high in today's morning session. The day's total was my 2nd best day, next to that 19.09 on the 15th. The "evening" session came around 4:30 again today, with the Cubs on TV for another 6:00 game.

Week 3 stats:

106.73 miles--15.25 miles/day
4.0 lbs lost

July stats, up-to-date:

270.36 miles--12.87 miles/day
13.5 lbs lost

Comparison:

Week 1: 90.43 miles
Week 2:
73.20 miles

Week 3: 106.73 miles

I am actually on pace to reach 399.1 miles at my current average. But that will decrease quite a bit the next few days. Gonna play ball with my Wichita State friends tomorrow, which means a little less running, then I may have a friend coming to visit Thursday/Friday. If so, we plan to play some ball Thursday evening, and a little golf Friday morning. If that goes as planned, that means not much running these next 3 days.

Plus, once I do hit my 300 mark, I am tentatively planning to coast a little bit, and focus on some sit-ups, push-ups, etc., in order to focus more on the midsection, and coming a little closer to my weight loss goal. Whether this means only running once a day for the final week or so, or just a little bit less each time, I haven't decided...

Movie later, after the game: Goal! The Dream Begins. Cheesy, if not lazy title, but actually a very inspiring flick, if you haven't seen it.

Won't start the movie until after the Cubs game, though, of course. They're tied 1-1 right now in the 9th, with the defending champion Phillies. It's been a real nice pitching duel so far. Philly has won 9 straight, and demolished the Cubbies last night, 10-1. Suffice to say the boys in blue could really use a win here.

Phillies closer Brad Lidge just had a line drive go off his foot right to Jimmy Rollins, who turned the double play to end the Cubs half of the 9th. Ridiculously dumb luck for Lidge. Fun-looking play, though, if I'm rooting for the other team.

Tonight's top 10 list:

Top 10 country singers (solo artists only):

10. Gary Allan
9. Chris Cagle
8. Luke Bryan
7. Sara Evans
6. Pat Green
5. Toby Keith
4. Taylor Swift
3. Trace Adkins
2. Jack Ingram
1. James Otto

I thought this would be a lot easier. I had a list of 20+ people originally typed in, and had to trim it to 10. If you listen to country at all, share some thoughts!!

The ones I left off...
George Straight, Jason Michael Carroll, Garth Brooks, Eric Church, Dierks Bentley, Clay Walker, Kenny Chesney, Carrie Underwood, Brad Paisley, Billy Currington

You're a friggin' Eagle, aren't you?

Day 10: INcomplete

Morning session: 2.00 miles
Evening session: 2.00 miles
Total distance: 4.00 miles

Ran a couple miles around the track both before and after playing ball at Wichita State today, but otherwise, it was essentially a day off. It was neither a "morning," or an "evening" session, but since we played at noon, I figure one run was in the AM, and one in the PM, so that's how I'm splitting it.

Weekly update: 81.98 miles (11.71 miles/day)
*This is just in the last 7 days (not accumulative), since last Friday's update. The pace obviously fell off some after today.*

Accumulative total: 120.29 miles (12.03 miles/day)

Weigh-in: 200.5 lbs

This is the one aspect of my month that I am not pleased with. I was really hoping to be under 200 by now. It's a big milestone for me to not only get under, but stay under. My pace is a little behind here.
Goal: 195 lbs by next Friday. I feel like this is attainable, and it's what I need to do to get back on pace for my weight loss goal.

Catching the last few minutes of football movie #8: Invincible. Makes me tear up every single time. Amazing flick.

Next on tap: Friday Night Lights. Highly overrated, in my opinion, but still an effectively made picture, I guess. *Net's being lame, so no pic for that one.*

Random
(basketball) thoughts for today:
I've decided the immense amount of running has improved the consistency of my jump shot. Perhaps because my biggest downfall on the court is over-thinking, whereas now I'm mainly just thinking about how sore my legs are. I've been borderline un-guardable on the court the last week-plus. It's a nice zone to be in. Euphoric, even.

Kirk Hinrich is more than likely about to get traded. It'll make my team more formidable, but still...*tear*

Paul Millsap is so overrated. No idea why NBA execs (Portland and Utah, in particular) are so gaga over him. Dude's about to make bank, and he's really not that great a player. *rolls eyes*

D, out.

Why Didn't You Write Me?

Day 9: Complete

Morning session: 5.18 miles
Evening session: 7.55 miles
Total distance: 12.73 miles

Broke my "No meat after 9" rule. By the time I got home from playing ball, and showered, it was like 9:10, and mom was making burgers. Sue me. :)

Tomorrow will most likely be the first day I don't reach 10+ miles. I'm headed to Wichita to play some ball with my Wichita State compadres. Then most likely sticking around for my friend Rachel's birthday dinner. So I won't get a whole lot of running in. Luckily, I'm at a pace where I can probably afford to have one lax day.

Although my average pace is 12.92 miles per day. Hate to see that tail off a bit, but it will. Shame...

Hangin' with the "little" (he's bigger than me) bro for a bit right now, but on tap for later is football movie #7: The Longest Yard: the Adam Sandler remake, not the Burt Reynolds original.

Vague ramblings in 3...2...1...
So I got a pretty huge pick-me-up today that changes my outlook on things quite a bit. I've come to the conclusion that no one truly understands it but me and God. And by that, I mean no one understands it but God. But I at least sort of know where He's going with it.

I'm a little embarrassed by my lack of faith in a particular department of late, and I don't want to get too ahead of myself, but I kind of feel like He sent me a little reminder today.

And I just need to keep reminding myself...

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DF2hh-Gsz0g

Final thought: I am 88.4% sure of what I will do when I complete my 300-mile quest. My mind is all but made up. A little nervous about it, but I think it will be cool. Contemplating keeping it a secret, but could possibly be persuaded to share the idea with a good enough friend. :)

D, out.
